Language Patterns

verb + 過 ... 未? (have you ever...?)

verb + 過 (gwo3) ... 未 (mei6) is the standard way to ask about past experience. It asks whether someone has ever done something. Answer with 過 (yes) or 未 (not yet).
你去過長洲未?
nei5 heoi3 gwo3 coeng4 zau1 mei6?
Have you been to Cheung Chau?

差唔多 + amount (almost / approximately)

差唔多 (caa1 m4 do1) means "almost" or "approximately". Place it before a quantity, time, or description to indicate something is nearly but not quite.
差唔多十點。
caa1 m4 do1 sap6 dim2.
Almost ten o clock.
差唔多到喇。
caa1 m4 do1 dou3 laa3.
Almost there.

聽講 (I heard that)

聽講 (teng1 gong2) means "I heard" or "reportedly". Use it at the start of a clause to introduce hearsay or something you were told.
聽講呢間餐廳好好食。
teng1 gong2 ni1 gaan1 caan1 teng1 hou2 hou2 sik6.
I heard this restaurant is very good.
聽講佢下個月結婚。
teng1 gong2 keoi5 haa6 go3 jyut6 git3 fan1.
I heard she is getting married next month.

一定要 + verb (must / definitely need to)

一定要 (jat1 ding6 jiu3) expresses strong intention or necessity — "must" or "definitely have to". Stronger than just 要.
你一定要試下!
nei5 jat1 ding6 jiu3 si3 haa5!
You must try it!
我一定要去睇下。
ngo5 jat1 ding6 jiu3 heoi3 tai2 haa5.
I definitely need to go see it.
