Language Patterns

好 + Adj (very/so + adjective)

In Cantonese, 好 (hou2) is the most common intensifier, equivalent to very or so. Place it directly before the adjective. No linking verb needed.

今日好熱

gam1 jat6 hou2 jit6

Today is very hot

間房好凍

gaan1 fong2 hou2 dung3

The room is very cold

Adj + 到 + result (so...that...)

Use adjective + 到 (dou3) + result to express that something is so much of a quality that it produces a result.

熱到出晒汗

jit6 dou3 ceot1 saai3 hon6

So hot that Im sweating all over

凍到震

dung3 dou3 zan3

So cold that Im shivering

AAB / AABB reduplication (descriptive)

Reduplicating adjectives creates a vivid, descriptive effect. AA地 softens the meaning (a bit A). AABB creates an atmospheric description.

涼涼地好舒服

Pleasantly cool and comfortable

The sky is overcast and damp

多過 (more than — preference)

Use 多過 (do1 gwo3) after a verb to express preference. It means you do something more than the alternative.

我鍾意夏天多過冬天

ngo5 jung1 ji3 haa6 tin1 do1 gwo3 dung1 tin1

I like summer more than winter

佢飲水多過飲茶

keoi5 jam2 seoi2 do1 gwo3 jam2 caa4

He/she drinks water more than tea
