Language Patterns

Stating nationality: 我係 + country + 人

To say where you are from, use 我係 (ngo5 hai6) + country name + 人 (jan4). The verb 係 works like English is/am.
我係香港人。
ngo5 hai6 hoeng1 gong2 jan4.
I am from Hong Kong.
佢係日本人。
keoi5 hai6 jat6 bun2 jan4.
They are Japanese.

Asking about jobs: 你做咩工作呀？

Use 做咩工作 (zou6 me1 gung1 zok3) to ask what someone does. To answer, use 我係 + job title.
你做咩工作呀？
nei5 zou6 me1 gung1 zok3 aa3?
What do you do for work?
我係醫生。
ngo5 hai6 ji1 sang1.
I am a doctor.

Saying your age: number + 歲

State your age with 我 + number + 歲 (seoi3). You can optionally add 今年 (this year) at the start.
我今年二十五歲。
ngo5 gam1 nin2 ji6 sap6 ng5 seoi3.
I am 25 years old this year.
佢三十歲。
keoi5 saam1 sap6 seoi3.
They are 30 years old.

Where you live: 住喺 + place

Use 住喺 (zyu6 hai2) followed by a place name. To ask, say 你住喺邊度呀？
我住喺九龍。
ngo5 zyu6 hai2 gau2 lung4.
I live in Kowloon.
你住喺邊度呀？
nei5 zyu6 hai2 bin1 dou6 aa3?
